London restaurants recommended by a local (and not 'touristy')

When people think of dining in London, they often picture the same famous spots plastered across Instagram or recommended in every tourist guide. But as someone who’s spent years exploring the city’s hidden corners, I’ve discovered a different side to London’s food scene - one where tiny, family-run cafés, hole-in-the-wall eateries, and unassuming restaurants serve some of the best meals you’ll ever have. In this article, I’m letting you in on the secret spots only locals know about, the kind of places where you won’t find a queue of tourists but will find incredible food, warm hospitality, and a true taste of London.

The Tamil Prince, Islington 115 Hemingford Rd, London N1 1BZ

When you live in a country where winter seems to last 80% of the year, there are two things you crave when the cold really sets in: bold, warming flavors and a cozy, homely atmosphere. This desi pub, tucked away in a quiet residential corner of Islington, is one of those places I find myself longing for on a weekly basis. The menu, crafted by co-founder and executive chef Prince Durairaj, is a celebration of his South Indian heritage, featuring vibrant, aromatic dishes from Tamil Nadu and beyond each one; bursting with flavor and guaranteed to keep you coming back for more.

If you’re struggling to snag a table at The Tamil Prince, don’t worry — the founders have two more fantastic spots to try: The Tamil Crown and their more laid-back sister restaurant, Tamila.

Kudu, Peckham 119 Queen's Rd, London SE15 2EZ

Kudu has been around for a while now and is well-known among London foodies, yet it remains a spot we always make the effort to revisit (trust me, it’s worth it). If you’re visiting London for the first time, Peckham might not be on your radar unless you have friends in the area, but this restaurant alone makes the trip worthwhile. By evening, the dim lighting and warm, intimate atmosphere set the perfect mood for a date night - effortlessly stylish without feeling pretentious. For those who love a front-row seat to the action, counter seating lets you watch the chefs at work, adding to the experience.

Specialising in South African-inspired cuisine, Kudu’s menu is all about bold flavours, creative dishes, and beautifully plated food that never disappoints. From their signature Kudu bread with melted lardo to perfectly grilled meats and delicate seafood dishes, every bite is packed with depth and character. Whether you're a longtime fan or a first-time visitor, this is one London dining spot that continues to deliver. Toconoco, Dalston Unit A, 28 Hertford Rd, London N1 5QT

My friends will probably not forgive me for mentioning this one, but it only felt right to include Toconoco since it’s a place I visit so regularly. This unassuming Japanese café is tucked away in a quiet spot by the canal, making it feel like a hidden retreat from the city’s usual bustle. If you don’t know it’s there, you could easily walk past it, but once you’ve discovered it, you’ll find yourself coming back again and again. The menu stays true to simple, home-style Japanese cooking, offering comforting dishes like onigiri, ochazuke, and silky udon noodles in a warming broth. Their tamago sando (Japanese egg sandwich) is a must-try, and the matcha lattes are some of the best in London. Top tip: check out their Instagram page to stay up to date with their daily specials. Mountain, Soho 16-18 Beak Street, London W1F 9RD,

Now boasting a Michelin star, the masterminds behind Brat have crafted an equally exquisite dining experience in the heart of Soho. And while this article is meant to highlight the spots where locals eat, believe it or not, we do venture into central London from time to time.

Mountain is a spacious, two-floor restaurant with a variety of seating options, making it perfect for everything from intimate dinners to lively group gatherings. The atmosphere strikes the right balance between buzzy and sophisticated, never too formal, but always polished. If I’m looking for a centrally located spot that’s vibrant, effortlessly cool, and guaranteed to deliver incredible food, Mountain is usually my top recommendation.

The menu takes inspiration from Spanish and Basque cuisine, with a focus on wood-fired cooking, bold flavours, and high-quality ingredients. Expect perfectly grilled meats, rich seafood dishes, and comforting, rustic plates that celebrate simplicity done exceptionally well. Whether you're sharing a whole grilled fish, indulging in their signature slow-cooked dishes, or enjoying a glass of natural wine at the bar Perfect for: Occasions, couples and group settings Nearest tube stations : Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus Website: https://mountainbeakstreet.com/

Kol, Marylebone 9 Seymour St, London W1H 7BA

If you were to ask me, if I could pick any restaurant in London to celebrate my birthday or an occasion in my life, it would be Kol. The blend of refined Mexican cuisine with British seasonal ingredients makes it one of the most exciting and unique dining experiences in the city. If it weren’t for their long waiting list, I’d probably try to visit once a month. So when those reservations open up, make sure you’re quick - this is a spot worth setting a reminder for.

From the moment you step inside, Kol feels warm and inviting, with earthy tones, an open kitchen, and an atmosphere that’s both elegant and relaxed. The tasting menu is a masterclass in flavor, offering beautifully crafted dishes that highlight the depth and complexity of Mexican cooking while using the best of British produce. Think yellow mole with Scottish langoustine, tamales with smoked roe, or a perfectly balanced mezcal cocktail to start your evening.

Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or simply treating yourself to an unforgettable meal, Kol is a place that delivers every time. Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself planning your next visit before dessert even arrives. Perfect for: Those really special occasions Nearest tube stations: Marble Arch Website: https://kolrestaurant.com/

Pique-Nique, Bermondsey

Tanner St, London SE1 3LD

Despite being located near one of London’s busiest railway stations, Pique-Nique is surprisingly tucked away. It actually took me a while to find it. There I was, strolling down Bermondsey Street, scanning the area for the restaurant, only to spot it nestled within a park, its fairy-lit conservatory sparkling in the distance. It’s the kind of hidden gem you could easily miss, but once you find it, it feels like a peaceful escape from the big smoke. The food here is just as charming as the setting. Serving up a refined yet approachable take on French-inspired dishes, Pique-Nique offers a menu full of fresh, seasonal ingredients. Whether it’s a delicate smoked trout salad, hearty duck confit, or their signature roasted vegetables, each dish is thoughtfully prepared, with bold flavours that feel both comforting and sophisticated. Their pastries are another highlight, with flaky, buttery delights that make it the perfect spot for a relaxed weekend brunch or afternoon tea. It's the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and savour every bite. Perfect for: Double dates and small family gatherings Nearest tube stations: London Bridge Website: https://pique-nique.co.uk/

Phat Phuc

The Courtyard, 151 Sydney St, London SW3 6NT

Before you ask, yes, the name is definitely a head-turner. When I told my partner I was craving a Phat Phuc, I could see the fear (and slight confusion) in his eyes. But lo and behold, this is actually the name of a hidden gem and an authentic Vietnamese noodle bar tucked away near King’s Road.

The menu is simple but packed with flavour, focusing on comforting bowls of pho, fragrant broths, and fresh, vibrant ingredients. The real standout, though, is the prawn laksa which includes a rich, coconut-based soup with just the right balance of spice, heat, and depth. It’s the kind of dish that warms you from the inside out, perfect for London’s chillier days. Quirky name aside, Phat Phuc delivers seriously good food in a laid-back, unpretentious setting which is exactly the kind of spot locals love to keep to themselves.

Perfect for: Casual lunch on a chilly day Nearest tube stations: Sloane Square, South Kensington Website: https://phat-phuc-noodle-bar.weeblyte.com/

Ramen Moto, Fitzrovia

6 Charlotte St., London W1T 2LR

And whilst we're on the topic of noodles... for a city filled with ramen spots, Ramen Moto in Fitzrovia proves that simplicity and skill always win. Tucked away on Charlotte Street, this small but exceptional ramen bar keeps things refreshingly straightforward. There are no gimmicks, no over-the-top toppings - just expertly made broth, perfectly chewy noodles, and deep, satisfying flavours that make locals return again and again.

The menu is focused, and that’s what makes it work so well. The miso ramen is rich and comforting, offering a robust, earthy depth that hits the spot every time. The shoyu ramen is lighter, but still packed with umami and full of flavour. For vegetarians, the veggie ramen is a standout with its own unique depth, so you won’t miss the meat. Add a side of crispy karaage chicken or gyoza, and you’ve got the ultimate comfort meal.

Perfect for: An easy dinner where you don't want to commit to booking Nearest tube stations: Goodge Street, Tottenham Court Road Website: https://www.instagram.com/ramen_moto_london/

The Washington, Belsize Park

50 England's Lane, London NW3 4UE

I’m going to be a bit biased here and add my local pub to this list. Firstly, because they serve great food and offer fantastic service, and secondly, it has exactly the kind of British pub atmosphere I love, with no rowdiness or beer-soaked countertops. Of course, people do enjoy a pint or two, but the setting here is cosy and relaxed, with friendly staff always making you feel at home.

Located on the charming England's Lane and just a short stroll from the iconic Primrose Hill, The Washington is the perfect spot to unwind after a walk in the park, and it’s dog-friendly too.

While many visitors to Hampstead Heath tend to stick around that area, making it near impossible to grab a Sunday lunch spot, I always recommend making the extra walk to Belsize Park. It’s like the quieter little sister of Hampstead, charmingly peaceful and much less crowded. You’ll be rewarded with a welcoming pub that offers a superb Sunday roast and an atmosphere that’s always just right.

Perfect for: Sunday lunch post-dog walk Nearest tube stations: Chalk Farm, Belsize Park Website: https://www.thewashingtonhampstead.co.uk/
